  • Abstrak (max. 1600 huruf atau 250 kata): In order to ascertain the elements influencing China’s policy efforts to halt Australian coal imports, this paper conducted a policy analysis. China started imposing restrictions on coal imports from Australia in February 2021. In addition, the country increased the processing period for arriving coal from 25 to 40 days and limited the annual amount of coal that could be imported through Dalian, the northern port. This policy is said to have been impacted by Huawei’s exclusion from Australia’s 5G network, which has been in place since August 2020 for security reasons. Tensions have existed between the two nations ever since Australia accused China in 2017 of meddling in its internal affairs. Australia has been greatly impacted by these limitations because China is its main export destination for coal from Australia. This study employs a descriptive research design and a qualitative methodology. Secondary data collected using the library research approach are used in the study. The rationale behind the Chinese government’s move to impose import restrictions on coal from Australia is explained by these techniques. This paper explains the steps taken by the Chinese government in response to Huawei’s 5G ban using the notion of Defensive and Offensive Realism. China, possessing more strength, employs a strategy of balancing power to protect its interests, which includes Huawei’s development of 5G. Given that China is a significant export market for a number of Australian goods, Australia is under pressure to suspend coal exports. In the latter instance, Australia supported the US, creating new issues rather than acting in good faith to improve relations. China consequently extended the embargo to include other goods including wine and cattle.
