- Abstrak (max. 1600 huruf atau 250 kata): Nickel is a very abundant natural resource in Indonesia. Its role in the energy transition through the transformation of the world to electric vehicles has increased the demand for nickel production in the global market. So that Indonesia as the largest nickel country takes this opportunity to downstream nickel commodities before being exported abroad. This study aims to explain the strategy carried out by Indonesia in developing nickel downstreaming in 2020. The concept used in the study is the concept of industrial development and the concept of downstreaming. The type of data used is secondary data processed using qualitative data analysis techniques to produce relevant data in answering the problem formulation which is then drawn into conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the strategy carried out by Indonesia in developing its domestic nickel industry is through 2 methods, namely the inward looking strategy and the outward looking strategy. The inward looking strategy focuses on internal development such as the construction of smelter facilities, supporting infrastructure, HR training, and so on. While the outward looking strategy is by establishing cooperation and investment with other countries in developing the EV battery ecosystem.
