- Abstrak (max. 1600 huruf atau 250 kata): The United States proposed an extension of the arms embargo to the UN Security Council against Iran. However, this was rejected by the Security Council because Iran was considered to be in compliance with the JCPOA agreement.This research aims to explain the reasons why the United States proposed an extension of the arms embargo to the UN Security Council against Iran in 2020. The extension of the sanctions against Iran was based on U.S. accusations that Iran supports terrorist groups in the Middle East, including those in Yemen and Syria. Therefore, if the embargo is lifted, Iran would be free to supply weapons, potentially extending conflicts in Venezuela, Syria, and Afghanistan. The type of research used in this study is explanatory, employing data collection techniques through literature review. The data analysis technique used is qualitative analysis. The theory applied is the national interest theory by Donald E. Nuechterlein. The results of this study indicate that the U.S. reasons for proposing the extension of the arms embargo against Iran are based on four aspects of national interest: defense of homeland, economic well-being, favorable world order, and promotion of values. The U.S. justification for the extension from the defense of homeland aspect is a strategy to protect the U.S. homeland. In terms of economic well-being, the U.S. proposed the embargo extension as an effort to prevent threats from Iran’s arms industry, which could intersect with U.S. markets. Regarding the favorable world order aspect, the U.S. aimed to maintain its supremacy in the Middle East. Lastly, in terms of the promotion of values, the U.S. sought to preserve the stability of its ideology, particularly in the Middle East region.
