- Abstrak (max. 1600 huruf atau 250 kata): The United States has been involved in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine since 2015, when Russia annexed Crimea. Then in 2022, when Russia carried out an invasion attack against Ukraine, the United States was again involved by imposing a number of sanctions in the form of an economic embargo against Russia. This study aims to explain the reasons behind the United States imposing an economic embargo on Russia after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This type of research uses explanatory with secondary data. The data analysis technique used is qualitative, and the theory used by the author is the theory of Neorealism by John Mearsheimer. The results of this study explain that from the perspective of Neorealism there are 2 (two) reasons for the United States in imposing an economic embargo on Russia, namely the first that the ambition of Ukraine to join NATO is used by the United States to expand its influence. In summary, the United States is utilizing this conflict situation to achieve its national interests by using sanctions in the form of an economic embargo against Russia as an instrument to achieve its strategic goal of expanding the influence of the United States through NATO. Then the second reason is that the United States wants to maintain its influence through democracy. In the application of democracy in the United States, which this country has used democracy as a tool to achieve political goals. The promotion of democracy in the name of freedom and human rights is only an excuse to achieve an interest of the United States, especially economic interests so as to strengthen the global leadership and dominance of the United States in Eastern Europe, especially Ukraine.
