- Abstrak (max. 1600 huruf atau 250 kata): The aim of this research is to analyze Morocco’s interests in the United States’ recognition of its sovereignty in Western Sahara in 2020. The author uses descriptive research with secondary data obtained through library research. The author uses the concept of national interests and the concept of recognition of sovereignty to form analysis results that are in accordance with the research objectives. Morocco has made various efforts to protect the Western Sahara region from outside influence, including normalization with Israel in 2020. This normalization provides many benefits for Morocco, including increasing Morocco’s legitimacy in the international world regarding Western Sahara. Thus, the normalization of relations became a way for Morocco to reassert its claim to Western Sahara through recognition from the United States. Morocco’s persistence in defending Western Sahara brings us to the fact that Western Sahara is an area rich in natural resources. Therefore, apart from wanting to unite the territories previously under the control of the Kingdom of Morocco in order to strengthen Moroccan politics in the region, Morocco also wants to gain economic benefits by managing the natural resources available in Western Sahara, because around 80% of Western Sahara’s territory is in under Moroccan rule. The research results show Morocco’s interests in the United States’ recognition of its sovereignty in Western Sahara, namely defense interests and economic interests. Therefore, the recognition of sovereignty granted by the United States gives Morocco strength in its claims to the territory.
