The problems is the United States emergence of protection against Tencent gaming products due to protect the United States domestic market from the influence of the Tencent company from China. This happened because Tencent made acquisitions to various gaming companies in the United States. The United States show the protection is supervision and issuing The Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act (FIRRMA) in 2018 as the basis for its protection policy against Tencent gaming companies from China. This FIRRMA under the responsibility of Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). In this study, the concept of modern protectionism is used, where protectionism is not conventionally required but by using the indirect types of barriers, beyond the imposition of tariffs and quotas. In this concept there are three classifications of protectionism including intentional protectionism, incidental protectionism, and instrumental protectionism. This article explains that there are several reasons for the United States to do the supervision to gaming of Tencent based on the concept of modern protectionism, where supervision is a practical form of incidental protectionism and the implementation of the 2018 FIRRMA policy as a form of instrumental protectionism.
